English Education Students Enhance Critical Thinking Through Debate Training

OKU Timur, June 19, 2026 — At Nurul Huda University, Campus C, Fifteen students from second semester participated in an intensive debate training program guided by mentor Mr. Nur Akmal. The activity was held at Nurul Huda University Campus C and aimed to strengthen students’ critical thinking, public speaking, argumentation, and analytical skills, which are essential competencies for future educators and professionals.

The training gathered enthusiastic students who were eager to develop their ability to construct logical arguments, respond to opposing viewpoints, and deliver persuasive speeches. During the session, participants engaged in structured debate practices using two thought-provoking motions: “This House Believes That the Pursuit of Happiness Is Inherently Selfish” and “This House Would Implement a Four-Day Workweek.”

The first motion encouraged students to critically examine the concept of happiness and its relationship with morality and social responsibility. Participants explored whether the pursuit of personal happiness can be considered selfish or whether it is a natural human need. They presented arguments supported by real-life examples, philosophical ideas, and social observations, which helped them deepen their understanding of ethics and human behavior.

The second motion focused on the implementation of a four-day workweek. Students analyzed both advantages and disadvantages of this policy. Supporters highlighted benefits such as improved work-life balance, increased productivity, and better mental health. Meanwhile, opposing teams raised concerns about economic efficiency, workload distribution, and organizational adjustment. This debate encouraged students to think critically about modern labor policies and their real-world impacts.

Throughout the session, Mr. Nur Akmal provided continuous guidance on debate structure, argument development, rebuttal techniques, and effective speech delivery. He emphasized the importance of logical reasoning, teamwork, and confidence in public speaking. Students also received constructive feedback to help them improve their performance and debating skills.

The activity also served as a platform for students to build confidence in expressing opinions in public. By engaging in constructive debate, they learned how to respect differing perspectives while defending their own arguments with clarity and evidence. This created an interactive and collaborative learning environment that enriched their academic experience.

Participants expressed that the training was highly beneficial, as it not only improved their debate abilities but also enhanced their communication and critical thinking skills. The chosen motions were considered relevant to current global and social issues, making the learning process more engaging and meaningful.

As future educators, the students recognized the importance of mastering communication and analytical thinking skills in their academic and professional journeys. Activities like this debate training help prepare them to become effective teachers, leaders, and contributors to society.

The program concluded successfully at Universitas Nurul Huda Campus C, leaving participants with valuable experience and deeper insight into structured argumentation and public discourse.
